Twin vs Full Mattress: Which Size is Best?

Twin vs Full mattress

When shopping for a kid mattress, the first question that needs to be answered is: What size mattress should I get for my child?

While the two sizes we will be discussing can be used for adults, typically they are sizes that are popular for children or guest rooms. We’re referring to Full vs Twin size mattresses.

Let’s break down the pros and cons of each mattress size along with the actual difference between Full and Twin as you make your decision.

Twin vs Full Dimensions

The first step is to understand the mattress dimensions to see which mattress size will work best in the bedroom. We have also included Twin XL mattress dimensions here for further comparison since this is also a popular mattress size for kids (and is the typical size you will find in college dorms).

Twin: 38” width x 74” length

Twin XL: 38” width x 80” length

Full: 53” width x 74” length

What size bedroom do you need for a Full size mattress?

We recommend a minimum of 10 feet x 10 feet in order to comfortably fit a Full size mattress and other furniture pieces.

What size bedroom do you need for a Twin size mattress?

Since a Twin size is smaller than a Full, the bedroom can be smaller at around 8 feet x 10 feet. This will still offer some space for a side table and a dresser.

What is the size difference between Twin and Full?

A Twin mattress and a Full mattress have the same length of 74” but a Twin mattress is approximately 15” less in width, making the Full mattress a more spacious choice.

What is the size difference between a Full vs Twin XL?

A Full mattress is larger in terms of the width since it is 53” whereas a Twin XL is only 38”. However, a Twin XL is 6” longer than a Full. If you want more space for a second person, we recommend a Full size mattress. However, if the mattress is for a tall teenager, a Twin XL is a popular choice.

A Twin mattress is best for…

Small children or a spare bedroom with limited space since this is the smallest standard mattress size on the market.

A Twin XL mattress is best for…

Taller children or teenagers since a Twin XL offers an additional 6” in length.

A Full mattress is best for…

Teenagers, guest bedrooms, or if you want a mattress that can support your child throughout the years. A Full mattress is also excellent for single adults. Some couples do sleep on Full mattresses but most prefer a Queen or King since these sizes offer even more room. If you like to cuddle all night, then a Full may work for you, but if you like your space, opt for a larger size.

Do Twin sheets fit Twin XL mattresses?

No, Twin sheets do not fit Twin XL mattresses since Twin XL mattresses are longer.

Are Twin and Twin XL mattresses less expensive than a Full mattress?

Yes, typically Twin and Twin XL mattresses are more affordable when compared to Full mattresses because mattress prices go up as the size increases. So a Full mattress would be less expensive than the same mattress in a Queen size.

Keep in mind that other price factors include mattress materials, certifications, shipping, etc. A certified organic Twin size mattress may be more expensive than a memory foam Full size mattress because of the difference in materials used.

What are the Benefits of Choosing a Twin Mattress?

  • Typically the most affordable option.
  • Suitable for most small bedrooms
  • Excellent for children.
  • Sheets are less expensive compared to larger sizes.

What are the Benefits of Choosing a Full Mattress?

  • More spacious than a Twin mattress, offering an additional 15” in width.
  • Suitable for some small bedroom.
  • Popular for guest bedrooms since it can accommodate adults as well.
  • Seen as a longer-term investment compared to a Twin since it can support a child into their early adulthood.
