How Much Should You Spend on a Mattress?

How much should you spend on a mattress?

Mattress shopping can feel like an incredibly overwhelming task because of how saturated the market is. There are a ton of different mattress brands, both conventional and organic. And then within those mattress brands, each company offers several mattress models. These mattresses come in a variety of price points, which brings us to the question: How much should you spend on a mattress?

Knowing your budget is important, but it’s also equally vital to know what exactly you’re buying in terms of materials and overall quality.

How much does a mattress cost?

This article will break down how much you should typically spend on a mattress and what that pricepoint really means.

What is the average cost of a mattress?

This is a tough question because it’s quite broad. When researching, you’ll find some say the average cost is between $1,000 – $1,500 for a Queen, while other articles will have an even broader range for the average mattress price.

Keep in mind that the average natural latex mattress will be more expensive than a polyurethane mattress, a memory foam mattress, or an innerspring mattress. There is a significant difference in materials, certifications, environmental impact, etc.

Let’s break it down by mattress materials and focus on Queen size mattress price since Queen is the most popular mattress size.

Memory Foam or Polyurethane Foam

According to The Sleep Foundation, the average Queen memory foam mattress costs between $700 – $1,200.

Innerspring

On average, an innerspring mattress is about $1,000 for a Queen.

Natural Latex

Unlike memory foam, natural latex is derived from rubber tree sap that is harvested and then baked into layers. Because of this, and the certifications attached to it, it is a more expensive mattress material.

The average Queen size natural latex mattress is about $2,000.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress includes both coils and some type of foam (either synthetic or natural latex).

They vary in pricing but on average they are slightly less expensive than a natural latex mattress, but more expensive than an innerspring.

Breaking Down the Cost: Mattress Sizes, Materials, & Certifications

How much is a mattress? This is a question that has so many variables.

A mattress brand creates their pricing around several factors, such as:

  • Quality of Materials
  • Certifications
  • Shipping
  • Labor
  • Sizing (affects the materials used, labor, & shipping costs)
  • Customization
  • Dealer network (pricing usually increases if the product is available in stores rather than only online)

Materials

A mattress at a lower price point typically uses lower quality materials like polyester, synthetic foam, springs, and even fiberglass.

Whereas a higher quality mattress will use materials such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, and avoid fabrics treated with chemical flame retardants, bleach, pesticides, or other harmful chemicals.

Certifications

There are a variety of certifications in the mattress industry, with some being more competitive and impressive than others.

However, do you know the one thing they all have in common? They all cost money. That’s right–certifications are not free.

That’s not to say that companies can just buy whatever certification they want (although there are some that require very little to receive in terms of material and facility standards). But there is a financial component to certifications, and that financial component must be taken into account when pricing products. These fees are not a one-time only fee; certifications must be renewed, some on a yearly basis.

There is also the labor that goes into keeping up with certifications, participating in audits, and making any changes certifying bodies require in order to stay in compliance.

Here are certifications we think are particularly worth looking for when mattress shopping:

  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)
  • Cradle to Cradle GOLD
  • Greenguard GOLD
  • EcoInstitut
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

Shipping

Shipping involves not only shipping to the customer, but shipping fees that companies must cover from material vendors.

When looking at customer shipping specifically, companies will either tack on shipping during checkout, or they will build a shipping fee into the actual cost of the mattress.

Labor

There is labor that goes into sewing the casing, cutting the layers of foam or latex, overseeing quality control, boxing up the mattress, etc.

Mattress Sizing

It is no surprise that the larger the mattress is, the more materials are used, and the more it costs. A Twin mattress is less expensive than its California King counterpart.

Customization

This can relate to an actual custom mattress (such as if someone orders an Alaskan King mattress that the company doesn’t typically make), or it can refer to the general design of the mattress and its customizable nature. For example, a company may stock multiple types of latex and density levels for extra comfort. And they may allow for layers to be swapped out if a customer isn’t satisfied–that also needs to be taken into consideration when determining mattress pricing.

Dealer Network

A wonderful aspect of having a dealer network attached to a mattress is that you can visit a store near you to try the mattress in person before committing to the purchase. However, the downside is that it does increase the price of the mattress since there is now a middle man between you and the manufacturer. Mattresses that are only available to purchase online are typically less expensive.

Is a Mattress a Worthy Investment?

Yes, you should invest in your next mattress for multiple reasons.

We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, so it’s incredibly important that we are sleeping on a mattress that is both comfortable and made with safe materials that aren’t off-gassing harmful chemicals into our indoor air environment.

This is where certifications come in—when you see the GOTS logo or Greenguard GOLD, you know this is a mattress that will not be introducing any questionable materials into your home. These mattresses must meet strict testing, responsible manufacturing practices, and supply chain standards in order to earn these certifications.

Not only should we be thinking of what we’re breathing in, but we also need to think about how our body is physically being supported. A mattress that is too firm or too soft will cause a whole host of issues, such as hip, shoulder, and back pain. An uncomfortable mattress can also affect your overall quality and duration of sleep, and it’s vital to get at least 7-9 hours a night!

So yes, it is absolutely worth investing in a quality mattress and paying more upfront so you don’t have to “pay for it” later.

How to Start Mattress Shopping

The first step is to know your budget. What is your budget if you are to pay for the mattress all at once? Can you increase that budget if you sign up for a payment plan? Plenty of mattress companies offer this which is super helpful for big purchases!

Once you know your budget, figure out what size mattress you want. This may also be affected by your budget. For example, if you are trying to decide between a Queen and a King, but your budget is tight, it probably makes the most sense to opt for a Queen to save money.

Once you know your budget & mattress size, figure out what is most important to you. Is it that the mattress is customizable? Is it that it does not have any memory foam? Is it a certain certification? Get your checklist ready and if you aren’t sure whether a mattress you are looking at fits your criteria, ask the company!

Read mattress blog reviews, watch YouTube videos, and if you are able, check out the mattress in person!
