Do Dogs Need a Dog Bed?

Dog lounging on a Savvy Doggy pet bed.

Dogs spend an average of 12-14 hours a day sleeping. So, we know dogs need their rest, but what exactly should they sleep on?

While some pet owners love having their dog share the bed with them, others want their own space.

We strongly recommend a dog bed for your dog, whether you want them to sleep there all night, or you just need a place for them to nap during the day.

But what is the best type of bed for a dog?

Should you get a memory foam dog bed?

What size dog bed does your dog need?

We answer these questions (and so much more) so keep reading!

Does my dog need a dog bed?

We recommend purchasing a dog bed for your dog so they have a space completely dedicated to them. Yes, the sofa is comfy, and maybe you let them hop on there when you are watching a movie, but there is nothing quite like having a cozy spot that is just yours. Your dog will love having their own plush bed for daytime naps, or for dozing off at night.

Should I get a memory foam dog bed?

We don’t recommend memory foam mattresses for humans, so we don’t recommend memory foam pet beds for dogs either.

Memory foam is a synthetic, man-made foam that can off-gas harmful chemicals into your home environment.

What is the best type of bed for a dog?

We recommend opting for natural latex instead of memory foam when choosing a dog bed. Sap is harvested from rubber trees and baked into cozy layers used for mattresses and yes, even pet beds.

An organic pet bed typically has an organic cotton cover so you won’t have to worry about your dog coming into contact with a synthetic material.

Your dog deserves a comfortable, healthy, and safe bed to rest on.

This is the organic dog bed we recommend.

What size dog bed does my dog need?

This depends on the size of your dog.

Typically the pet bed product page will show the dimensions of the bed so you can visualize the size and/or will recommend a size based on your dog’s weight or breed.

It also depends on whether they like to curl up or spread out. For example, you may have a smaller dog that could easily fit on a small dog bed but if your dog likes to stretch out in their bed or brings all their toys with them, you’ll want to size up to either a medium dog bed or even a large dog bed.

Know the size of the pet bed, the size of your dog, and how they tend to sleep or relax. That will help you determine which size is best!

Do dogs need a bed in their crate?

You could technically use some fluffy blankets but a dog bed is a great addition to your dog’s crate. It will certainly make the crate a more comfortable space, especially for dogs that struggle with anxiety.

Do dogs prefer beds or floors?

When it’s really hot out, a dog will enjoy lounging on a cool wooden or tile floor. However, in general, a dog will prefer the comfort of a bed, which is why we recommend having a dog bed in your home!

Do I need a waterproof dog bed cover?

You don’t NEED it, but we STRONGLY recommend a waterproof liner when using a dog bed. Not only do accidents happen (especially with very young or very old dogs), but your dog may come into the house all wet from the rain and plop right on their bed. Maybe after a bath it’s the first place they want to lounge, even when they aren’t fully dry yet.

Whatever the situation, a waterproof liner will protect the dog bed.

How do I wash my dog bed?

Well, not every dog bed can just go in the washing machine. When it comes to an organic pet bed made of natural latex, you cannot put it in the wash. However, if you have a dog bed with a removable cover, you can remove the outer cover and wash it.

Always read washing instructions BEFORE doing the laundry. If you are unsure, contact the company.

Does my dog need an orthopedic dog bed?

Typically elderly dogs, dogs recovering from an injury, or dogs that have muscular or joint issues (such as arthritis or hip dysplasia) can benefit from an orthopedic dog bed. These dogs need extra pressure point relief that sometimes a standard dog bed cannot provide.

Orthopedic dog beds tend to be firmer than a traditional dog bed, and can offer even more support.

While not listed as an orthopedic dog bed, the Savvy Doggy Extra Support is designed for dogs who fall in the category of needing extra relief. It’s also a fantastic pet bed for large dog breeds who need that additional layer of thickness this bed provides.

Should I get a raised dog bed?

A dog bed can simply be placed on the floor. However, if you want an elevated pet bed, you can purchase a pet platform bed (yes, they have them for dogs). The slats will also allow for the bed to breathe, which is especially helpful for latex.

We recommend a wooden dog bed made of sustainably-sourced wood and zero-VOC finishes for the most natural space. Avoid harsh chemical finishes that off-gas into your home. Your pet (and you) will breathe in those chemicals. Typically those intense finishes also have a strong smell and can lead to a nasty headache. No, thanks!
