A Guide to Pillow Sizes: Choosing Your Pillow

A guide to pillow sizes.

Are you familiar with all the different pillow sizes? Specific measurements can vary based on the manufacturer, but there are Standard, Queen, and King size pillows, along with body pillow sizes, travel sizes, and more.

But how do you know which one is right for you?

Let’s break down general pillow measurements so that you are informed while shopping and can choose the best pillow size for your needs.

Standard Pillow Size

General Measurement: 20 x 26 inches

A Standard Pillow is best when sleeping in a Twin, Twin XL, or Full size bed. It is the smallest of the three popular sizes (Standard, Queen, and King).

Standard pillows are highly recommended when shopping for a kid pillow since they do not need a very large one. In fact, the smaller and flatter the pillow, the better. Opt for an adjustable pillow when shopping for a child so you can control the overall height by removing as much stuffing as you’d like. Here is one of our top-selling adjustable pillows.

If you tend to only sleep on the corner of your pillow, a Standard one may do just fine. Standard is also typically cheaper than larger sizes so opting for a smaller size can save you a bit off the price tag. However, if you care about uniformity and purchasing pillows that meet the size criteria of your mattress, then you should purchase the size that correlates with your bed (example: Purchasing a King size pillow for your King mattress).

Queen Pillow Size

General Measurement: 20 x 30 inches

A Queen pillow is primarily used in Queen size beds because two of these pillows will fit nicely side-by-side atop a Queen mattress, whereas King pillows would be much too crowded.

A Queen can technically fit in most Standard pillowcases. However, if you have a very full pillow that has substantial height, we recommend sticking to a Queen pillowcase. The tighter the pillowcase is around the pillow, the firmer the pillow will be. So if you want a soft pillow with some fluff to it, or you simply want it to not be any firmer than it already is, you should have a pillowcase that gives it plenty of room (or is even a little oversized).

King Pillow Size

General Measurement: 20 x 36 inches

King pillows are typically used with King or CA King mattresses since it is the largest of the head pillows and gives the bed a more uniform look. A King size pillowcase is the only size that will fit appropriately.

If you prefer a more compact pillow, you should aim for Standard or Queen. However, keep in mind that a Standard size pillow will look lost in a bed as large as a King. This really boils down to aesthetic preferences.

Body Pillow Size

Body pillows come in a variety of sizes due to people’s differing heights and overall build. Some sleepers need a more petite-sized body pillow while others need a larger pillow that will offer plenty of support.

Body pillows are excellent for side sleepers since they offer pressure point relief for the hip and shoulder while also promoting proper spinal alignment. They are also used during pregnancy for extra support.
