You are ready to hit the road with your RV but first, you have to find a mattress, or mattresses, that are the right size for your space.
It is important to measure the area where your mattress will be so you are able to determine the width, length, and height that will be best. This information is vital when mattress shopping so you know whether you are able to purchase a standard size mattress that is readily available, or if you will need to opt for an RV size mattress or a custom size mattress.
This blog post highlights various mattress dimensions. Our goal is to make your mattress shopping experience a little easier as you furnish your RV home.
Are RV Mattress Sizes Different?
Yes, RV mattress sizes are different from traditional mattress sizes, especially when looking at the length of the mattress. RV mattresses are typically shorter, and can even have less thickness. This helps decrease unnecessary weight and also allows the mattress to fit in more compact spaces, even when ceiling height is a factor.
For example, a traditional Queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. An RV Queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 75 inches long. In terms of the height of the mattress, this varies for both traditional and RV size mattresses. Most keep the height of their mattress 10” or less when shopping for their RV.
Sometimes the width of the mattress is also more narrow compared to standard mattresses. This is especially helpful for compact bunk beds.
While traditional size mattresses can sometimes fit in RVs, you will want to confirm what dimensions your particular space can accommodate.

What is the Best RV Mattress?
There isn’t one mattress that is the best for an RV. Choosing a mattress is all about your personal preference. In terms of the feel, you might prefer a medium or firm mattress if you have nerve-related back pain, or you may gravitate towards a softer mattress if you are a side sleeper looking for pressure point relief.
When it comes to the materials, we always recommend choosing natural latex instead of memory foam, and opting for a breathable organic cotton casing instead of polyester. This is our recommendation for all mattresses, whether they be in a house or an RV. However, keep in mind that natural latex is heavier than polyurethane foam so if weight is a concern, especially for a larger mattress, you should consider all your options and choose what makes the most sense for your needs.
We also recommend adding a natural bed rug under your mattress for extra breathability, especially in an RV where humidity is more common. A bed rug can also help prevent mold.
The key for an RV is to make sure whatever mattress you choose fits the space. Space is so limited in an RV so having accurate measurements is crucial.
Can I Use a Mattress Topper with an RV Mattress?
Yes, you can use a mattress topper but keep in mind that a topper will increase the height of the mattress. As always, check the dimensions of the topper, whether it is a RV mattress topper or a standard mattress topper, to make sure it is the correct size to cover your entire mattress.
If you sleep hot, we recommend using a wool mattress topper since wool naturally regulates temperature.
Custom RV Mattresses
If you are looking for an RV mattress but the brands you have researched only offer standard household mattress sizes, you can always opt to have a custom mattress that is crafted specifically for you with the dimensions you need.
Savvy Rest offers GOTS-certified organic mattresses that are available to custom order (at an additional cost). This allows you to order the dimensions you need while still getting a quality mattress.
What is also unique about Savvy Rest mattresses is that you can customize the feel of the mattress by choosing Soft, Medium, or Firm layers of Dunlop latex or Talalay latex. You don’t have to sacrifice comfort in an RV–you can have a luxurious latex mattress that is supportive and restful.
