Choosing a Bedside Table: Materials, Design, and Storage

Floating bedside table on the Afton platform bed.

When shopping for bedside tables, we recommend not only looking at style but also materials and storage. Whether you are searching for a traditional bedside table with drawers, or want a more modern look with floating nightstands, these tips will help you when shopping for bedroom furniture.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding bedside tables.

Do I Need Bedside Tables?

While bedside tables are not absolutely necessary, they are in most bedrooms. Bedside tables allow you to have a lamp by the bed, a place to set your phone, to have water beside your bed or your nighttime medication. They are incredibly versatile and useful.

Do Bedside Tables Need to Match?

Most people choose to have two of the same bedside table on either side of the bed. However, you can have two different tables, though we recommend they at least match in color and style, and that they of course feel cohesive with your platform bed.

Should I Choose a Small Beside Table?

You should choose a small bedside table if you are in a bedroom with limited space or one that is relatively narrow. However, if you are in a spacious bedroom, you have more flexibility on size and can choose a bedside table based on style and functionality.

We do recommend that if you have an area rug in the bedroom underneath your bed frame, you choose bedside tables that will fit within the area rug so they aren’t hanging off the rug. This would not only look odd but more importantly, the bedside table would be at an angle and not properly supported.

Should I Choose a Wooden Beside Table?

Yes, we always recommend a wooden bedside table because wood is a sustainable resource and more natural option when compared to particle board. Our favorite woods are poplar, maple, and oak. We also recommend only choosing a bedside table that uses zero-VOC finishes to avoid harmful chemicals off-gasing in your home.

Beside Table Materials & Chemicals to Avoid

  • Particle board and engineered woods
  • Harsh glues and laminates
  • PFAS
  • VOCs
  • Formaldehyde

What is a Floating Bedside Table?

A floating bedside table is attached to the wall or to the platform bed and “floats” so that it is not touching the floor. It is typically a boxy design and is considered a modern bedside table.

Floating Bedside Table Pros

  • Modern design
  • Adds style & simplicity to a bedroom
  • Excellent for those with limited space since they are more compact and not placed on the floor
  • Convenient for those who wish to avoid clutter

Floating Bedside Table Cons

  • Don’t have as much storage as larger bedside tables with drawers
  • If you rent where you cannot drill into the wall, a wall-mounted floating bedside table is not recommended
  • Not as suitable for styles such as farmhouse, cottagecore, or more traditional decors since they are considered modern in design.

Do Floating Bedside Tables Offer Storage?

Yes, the amount of storage though depends on the individual floating bedside table. Some have an open shelf, while others do have built-in storage. You can store small items like your phone and charger, lip balm, sleep mask, etc.

What Style Bedside Table Should I Choose?

You should choose the bedside table style that fits with the room’s overall aesthetic and one that you personally feel makes the space feel tranquil and comfortable.

Here are a few bedroom styles to consider:

  • Contemporary
  • Farmhouse / Rustic
  • Vintage
  • Hygge
  • Coastal / Beach
  • Mid-Century Modern
  • Cottagecore
