When shopping for furniture, there are several factors to take into consideration.
It’s important to know the specific type of furniture piece that will work in your home based on size and comfort. When focusing on seating in particular, you will have options such as sofas, couches, and loveseats.
Are you looking for something formal or more relaxed? Is a sofa the best piece of furniture for the room or will you need to opt for something more compact?
This blog post will dive into the differences between a sofa and a couch, even if the words are quite often used interchangeably. We will also look at loveseats, which are typically considered the smallest of the three options.
What is a Sofa?
A sofa is a cushioned piece of furniture that seats multiple people and typically goes in a living room or family room. It has upholstered arms, back rests, and sometimes even an attached chaise for extra seating.
A sofa is considered a more formal piece of furniture when compared to a couch. It offers comfort but also sleek lines, fine upholstery, and usually wooden legs.
A sofa is the centerpiece of a sitting area and sets the tone of the space through its design and color palette.
What is a Couch?
A couch is also a cushioned piece of furniture that seats multiple people, however, it is considered a more casual option when compared to a sofa.
A couch is not considered the best choice for a formal setting but instead is preferred for an office or basement movie room (this is where a reclining couch would be an excellent choice).
A couch doesn’t always have arms and can sometimes have softer, more relaxed cushions, making it a decent choice for lounging or even sleeping temporarily if no bed is available.
So, when comparing a couch vs a sofa, the main factor really boils down to the aesthetic. If you’re going cozy casual, a couch is the better fit. But if you are looking to dress up your space, choose a sofa with quality upholstery and a sleek design.
What is a Loveseat?
A loveseat is a two-seater furniture piece that resembles a sofa on a smaller scale due to the more compact width. It is an ideal option for smaller spaces where a sofa would overpower the room.
Sofa vs Sectional
A sectional is larger than a sofa and involves multiple independent pieces that connect to create ample seating (and sometimes even built-in storage). There are L-shaped sectionals, U-shaped sectionals, and chaise sectionals to name a few popular configurations.
If you are looking for extra seating or for the best lounging experience, a sectional may be the right choice for you.

Dimensions
Please note the following dimensions are a general estimate. When shopping for seating, always make sure you know the dimensions of the specific furniture piece you are purchasing. This will ensure it will fit in your home. Also note any doorways, stairs, or other obstacles that could affect delivery and set-up.
Sofa Dimensions: The Savvy Rest organic sofa is approximately 84” wide, 34” deep, and 30.5” tall. When looking at three-seater sofas generally, the width can vary from 75-90”, the depth from 34-40”, and the height from 30-36”.
Couch Dimensions: A three seater couch is similar in size to a sofa (see above measurements). If you are purchasing a reclining couch, make sure you take that into consideration when measuring the space between the couch and your coffee table.
Loveseat Dimensions: A two-seater Savvy Rest loveseat is approximately 60” wide, 34” deep, and 30.5” tall. If looking at a larger range of loveseats, the width typically ranges from 58-70”, the depth 30-40”, and the height 30-36”.
Sectional Dimensions: This varies depending on the style chosen. For example, a L-shaped sectional is about 95-115” wide but you can find smaller sized ones under 95” that are better suited for apartments. Learn more about sectional sizes here.
