When shopping for a mattress, one factor you may wish to consider is the weight. A mattress’ weight is determined by mattress size as well as the core material (memory foam, innersprings, natural latex, etc).
This blog post will explore the general weight of each mattress size. When looking at a particular mattress model, we recommend contacting the manufacturer to inquire how much their mattress weighs. Perhaps you live alone and only want to purchase a mattress that you can physically maneuver yourself, or maybe you just want to make sure your bed frame will properly accommodate it. Whatever the reason, don’t be shy–contact the mattress company!

Is the Weight of a Mattress Important?
You need to know the weight of your mattress because it must be properly supported by the foundation, box spring, or platform bed that you choose.
For example, a latex mattress is too heavy for a box spring. A latex mattress has the ability to crush a box spring, making it incompatible. You need something sturdy, typically a platform bed with slats 2-3”. If the slats are too far apart, the latex won’t be supported. If the slats are too close together, the latex will not have proper airflow.

How Much Does a Mattress Weigh?
A mattress can weigh under 100 pounds for smaller sizes, and over 100 pounds for larger sizes but if looking at a general range, typically a mattress weighs anywhere between 40-200 pounds. The material chosen is a huge factor in determining the weight of the mattress, as is the thickness of the mattress.
How Much Does a Twin Mattress Weigh?
A Twin mattress is the smallest standard mattress size (other than a crib mattress) and can weigh between 40-90 pounds depending on the type of material selected.
How Much Does a Twin XL Mattress Weigh?
A Twin XL mattress is longer than a Twin mattress (it is half of a King mattress) and weighs approximately 50-100 pounds depending on the type of material. For example, a memory foam mattress is typically going to be on the lighter side while a natural latex mattress will be on the heavier side.
How Much Does a Full Mattress Weigh?
A Full mattress weighs anywhere from 60-140 pounds. Besides considering the weight of the materials used themselves, another factor to consider is the thickness of the mattress. The thicker the mattress, the heavier it will be. For example, if you are looking at a natural latex mattress with an overall thickness of 7 inches, and then a natural latex mattress that is 10 inches thick, with each mattress containing similar densities of Dunlop latex, the 10-inch mattress will be heavier.
How Much Does a Queen Mattress Weigh?
A Queen mattress is the most popular mattress size for couples and weighs around 90-160 pounds. A Queen mattress is an excellent choice for couples whose bedroom isn’t quite large enough for a King mattress. At 60” x 80”, a Queen is cozy yet still offers ample room so each person feels they have enough space.
How Much Does a King Mattress Weigh?
A King mattress can weigh anywhere from just shy of 100 to close to around 200 pounds. A King mattress is on the top end of standard mattress sizes and measures 76” x 80”.
How Much Does a California King Mattress Weigh?
A California King mattress weighs about the same as a King (100-200 pounds). A California King mattress has less width but more length than a King mattress, measuring at 72” x 84”.
Which Mattress Weight is Best for Me?
When mattress shopping, consider the following…
- Mattress Materials: Opt for organic and natural materials when possible for your health and the health of our planet.
- Mattress Size: Measure your bedroom and then look at mattress dimensions (or simply search online what size mattress is best for a room of your size). You may have more than one mattress size option depending on how much bedroom furniture you have.
- Mattress Set Up: Are you setting up the mattress alone or will you have help? Does the mattress come in one box? Is it in separate pieces (such as some customizable latex mattresses where you add the latex to the casing)? When in doubt, call the mattress company you are interested in to ask questions about mattress weight and the set-up process.
The more important question is really, “Which mattress is best for me?” The weight of the mattress is certainly a factor, but it’s not the whole picture.
