How Long Do Mattresses Last?

Organic latex mattress

You’ve had your mattress for several years and you’re wondering if it’s time to replace it. Or perhaps you are already mattress shopping but are trying to choose a mattress that will last as long as possible. This blog post will look at how long mattresses last, with the biggest factor being materials used.

So, how long does a mattress last? Let’s find out.

How Long Should a Mattress Last?

In general, a mattress should last several years, but various factors impact the longevity of a mattress, such as if the mattress is made of memory foam vs natural latex. Here is what you should keep in mind when considering the lifespan of a mattress.

  • Mattress Materials: A memory foam mattress typically will not last as long as a natural latex mattress.
  • How Often the Mattress is Used: A mattress in your guest room will be used much less than your own mattress, which can help keep its shape and support intact for a longer span of time.
  • Your Weight: When determining how long your own mattress will last, your weight is a factor. If you take the same exact mattress and you have one petite adult sleeping on it vs one petite adult and one average sized adult, the mattress with the petite adult will have less overall wear since only one small person is sleeping on it. However, keep in mind that this is a generalization and greatly depends on other factors as well (such as the ones above). We’re not recommending kicking your partner out of the bed!
  • Mattress Care: If you keep your mattress in humid conditions or never use a mattress protector, your mattress’ lifespan will be negatively impacted. Depending on the type of mattress you have, you may need to rotate or flip the mattress as well. Here are some mattress care tips.

How Long Do Memory Foam Mattresses Last?

Memory foam mattresses can last for several years depending on quality. There is no exact number, but it is safe to say a memory foam mattress can last 5-7 years, sometimes even longer at around 10 years.

Over time, memory foam mattresses have a tendency of losing their form and showing signs of wear through dips and sags. This is typically because memory foam mattresses retain body heat. It is your body heat that allows the foam to conform around your curves, offering excellent pressure point relief. However, over time, this can lead to dips since the mattress will struggle to bounce back the older it is.

How Long Do Hybrid Mattresses Last?

A hybrid mattress includes both foam and springs. The foam could be memory foam or even natural latex. Depending on the quality of the foam itself, a hybrid mattress can last 10 years but on average is more often around 7 years.

How Long Do Natural Latex Mattresses Last?

In terms of longevity, natural latex is the clear winner. Natural latex mattresses can last 10-20 years, sometimes even longer. Of course, there are various factors that determine how long a mattress will last, but if taken care of properly, natural latex is durable, supportive, and a worthy investment.

If you cannot afford a natural latex mattress, a hybrid mattress containing natural latex is the next best bet, since the combination of latex and springs has a greater chance of avoiding significant body impressions compared to a lower-end memory foam mattress.

Signs a Mattress Needs to Be Replaced

  • Dips or sags
  • Foam breaking down / oxidizing
  • Uncomfortable
  • Lacks support
  • Waking up with pain
  • Significantly stained
  • Unpleasant odors
  • Need a larger mattress size

Our Mattress Recommendation: Organic Latex Mattress

We recommend a Savvy Rest organic latex mattress for the following reasons…

While we have a few options, our most popular organic mattress is the Serenity mattress, made with 3 layers of natural latex and covered in our organic casing made of organic cotton and organic wool.

If this is over budget, we also have a hybrid mattress made with your choice of natural latex and either Medium or Firm coils.
